Quick Shots For 12/08/2017

Last weekend U2 was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. After watching their two performances I had only one thought: I really miss the U2 of the 1980's and early 90's.
I'm sure you've seen several ads on television for various prescription drugs. You know, the ones that tell you to "ask your doctor about . . ." You're probably also familiar with the long lists of warnings, precautions, and disclaimers associated with these drugs. The one that always gets me is, "Don't take this medication if you are allergic to this medication." This raises two questions.
  1. How do you know you are allergic to the drug if you've never taken it before?
  2. If you know you are allergic to the drug, is this warning even necessary? I mean, why would you anyone want to induce an allergic reaction?

Over the past several weeks I have seen Redbox machines around town advertising the new Assassin's Creed: Origins video game for rent. What is the point? This is an open world game that howlongtobeat.com says takes over 40 hours to complete, significantly longer than the one-night rental. If you keep it long enough to finish it, the rental fee will probably be more than what it would have cost to buy the game outright. "Terrence," you say, "Someone might want to rent the game for a night to see if they like it before buying it." To that, I say there is a cheaper way to accomplish the same thing: watch a Let's Play video or Twitch stream. It makes a lot more sense, to me at least.
