The “White Elephant Gift Exchange.” A favorite staple of many a holiday party everywhere. While the rules may vary from family to family, the basic premise is the same. Everyone brings a gift and draws a number. On your turn, you may steal a gift that has already been opened or you may pick a new gift from those yet to be opened.  If your gift is stolen, you are given the same options: steal a gift or pick an unopened one.  The game continues until everyone has had a turn and has received a gift. It’s fun and everyone has a good time (especially if your circle of friends has those specific gag gifts that are included

Naaman, The COVID-19 Vaccine, and Faith In God

Like everyone else, I am ready for COVID-19 to be over. My reasons, however, probably differ from most other people’s. Introverted as I am, I don’t mind the lock-downs, social distancing, and remote meetings. Masks don’t bother me. They’re just another article of clothing that offers me the opportunity to express myself while protecting others. I feel the vaccine is a no-brainer. A little discomfort and inconvenience is a small price to pay to stay healthy enough to continue to do God’s work, including caring for my wife and children. What I don’t like about COVID is all the division that has arisen

For several weeks now, pretty much as long as we’ve been living this “shut-in” existence, I’ve mulled over writing this article. This week’s online sermon on the topic of Doubt offered me further motivation to make this post.

The sermon’s primary target audience was Christians who might be experiencing doubts about how God will see them through the current COVID-19 pandemic or questioning things in scripture they don’t understand. Back in the mid-2000s, I received a cold call from a job placement service I had once used. They were representing a firm that had a position for which I was qualified and were wondering if I would consider interviewing. While I had a satisfying job at the time with a really good civil engineering firm, I agreed to see what this other firm had to offer. I wasn’t committing to anything and figured it certainly couldn’t hurt to take a look.

Over the next couple of weeks, I went on two interviews, found their proposal attractive, and eventually agreed to take the position. The placement agency gave me a copy

This past weekend I took a trip to Ephesus . . . figuratively, of course. The trip I actually took was to my Church where I watched a Living Letters presentation of the Book of Ephesians. Living Letters is the brain-child of Stephen Trafton (who also happens to be my church’s worship leader) and his wife, Juliette. Drawing upon their theatrical background, Stephen and Juliette bring various books of the Bible to life while also giving the audience a glimpse into the times and culture which surrounded the writings.

The Living Letter’s presentation of Ephesians is pretty much a one act play in two scenes.
